Alternative Power Flow Solutions

Slides from the Texas A&M Smart Grid Center webinar entitled “All About Power Flow Alternative Solutions Including How to Avoid Them”, delivered on September 3, 2025, may be accessed here. Alternative power flow solutions consist of those solutions that satisfy the non-linear power flow equations but do not represent stable operating points that would occur in an actual power system. Alternative solutions often, but not always, involve low bus voltages. The presentation includes some description of tools in PowerWorld Simulator that help avoid alternative solutions.
