Synthetic Power Flow Cases

The Illinois Center for a Smarter Electric Grid (ICSEG), part of the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is developing synthetic power system models based entirely on publicly available information. These can be used for research and testing without violating confidentiality agreements or Critical Energy Infrastructure Information (CEII) regulations. Models are available in PowerWorld Simulator (pwb/pwd) and other industry formats.

One large-scale example is this 2000-bus Texas model that is entirely synthetic, built from public information and a statistical analysis of real power systems. It bears no relation to the actual grid in this location, except that generation and load profiles are similar, based on public data.
