Impact of October 2023 Eclipse on Solar PV Generation
An annular solar eclipse will pass over North and South America on Saturday October 14, 2023. Since the path of the eclipse crosses regions with large amounts of solar PV generation, Professor Thomas Overbye of Texas A&M University produced a two-minute video that shows the estimated impact of this eclipse on US PV generation. Since the initial video was produced prior to the eclipse, it shows two simulations: 1) with assumed clear skies and 2) assuming the cloud cover from the same date in 2022. Once the eclipse has occurred, they will update it using the actual cloud cover, and also provide estimated impacts of the total eclipse that will occur over North America in April 2024. The images and simulations for this video were done using PowerWorld Simulator Version 23. Feel free to use the video as desired, such as showing it in educational settings.
